Cal Poly Building 47 – Faculty Offices
CAL POLY, SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA
The Liberal Arts College at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo was busting at the seams in former faculty offices with no conference room or space for the Department Head. Expansion was the option chosen for the courtyard in the shadow of the iconic Fisher Science Building. The original Faculty Offices Building rests on period belled caissons. These types of foundation systems are less common today due to inspection requirements and worker safety. Cast-in-place drilled caissons were chosen to bear into the formational material approximately 15 feet below grade as it gently slopes down the infamous Cal Poly Campus hill. The Cold-Formed Steel Cavity Wall building is a non-descript addition meant to compliment the surrounding structures of Cast-in-Place Concrete. The Department was happy with their new expanded space.
